The Thirty-Six Heavenly Generals of the Thunder Sect are important guardian deities in the Chinese Taoist Thunder Spell System. They are led by the Supreme Deity of Nine Heavens, Emperor Yuan of Thunder Sound and Universal Peace, and are responsible for summoning clouds and distributing rain, as well as punishing rebels and eliminating evil. The list of their members varies in different texts, but their core functions are closely related to thunder spell casting and supervision of heaven and earth.

Among them, deities such as Guan Yu and Zhao Gong Ming have incorporated elements of folk belief, reflecting the openness of the Taoist deity system. The Thirty-Six Heavenly Generals belong to the Five Thunder Commanders and hold an important position in Taoist rituals for disaster relief and evil expulsion. Through the practice method of “unifying qi with thunder and revealing the deity through thunder”, they perform their duties of summoning clouds and distributing rain, as well as punishing rebels and eliminating evil. For example, the functions of deities such as Guan Yu and Zhao Gong Ming have transcended the thunder spell itself and become objects of widespread popular belief.
