Thunder God

Le Gong is also known as Le Shen or Le Shi. He is a deity in ancient Chinese mythology who is specifically responsible for thunder. In Taoism, he is regarded as an important guardian deity of the Thunder Department, responsible for implementing thunder rituals, distributing clouds and rain, and punishing evil. Because thunder represents the yang energy of the celestial realm, he is called “Gong”. His name first appeared in “Jiuzhuan Yuanyou” of the Chu Ci: “Left the Rain God to wait immediately, and right Le Gong to guard. “

In the Taoist pantheon, Le Gong belongs to the subordinates of Lezu, the Ninth Heaven Yiyuan Leisheng Puhua Tianzun. He is an important deity at the execution level of the Thunder Department and, together with the Electricity Mother, the Wind Spirit, and the Rain God, forms the weather deity system, and is under the jurisdiction of the Jade Emperor.

Image Evolution

The image of Leigong has undergone a long process of evolution from its primitive form to a fully humanized one:

In ancient times: According to “Shan Hai Jing”, it was described as “a dragon with a human head, and by beating its abdomen, thunder could be produced”. Thunder was made by hitting the abdomen.

During the Qin and Han dynasties: It gradually became more human-like. In “Lun Heng” by Wang Zeng of the Eastern Han period, it was described as “having the appearance of a strongman, with the left hand holding a connected drum and the right hand pushing a stick, resembling the act of striking”. It held a drumstick and struck the connected drum to produce thunder.

After the Tang and Song dynasties: The image basically took the form of: a bird-faced Leigong with a mouth, two wings on the back, three eyes on the forehead, exposing the chest and abdomen, with eagle-like claws, holding the Leigong chisel (hammer drill), and exuding a majestic aura. The characteristic of “monkey-like face and bird-like beak” might be related to Leigong’s ability to fly quickly and have sharp eyesight.

Functions and Responsibilities

The core functions of Leigong include:

Controlling Thunder: Managing thunder and lightning, working in conjunction with the Goddess of Electricity (Lightning Lady), to manifest the power of thunder and lightning through the attributes of yin and yang. Raising the drum to produce thunder, holding the mirror to create lightning.

Aiding Agriculture: As the god of weather, he participates in the formation of clouds and distribution of rain, ensuring a bountiful harvest for farmers. He is an important guardian deity for the farmers.

Enforcing Justice on Behalf of Heaven: The most important function is “Enforcing Punishment on Behalf of Heaven”, responsible for identifying the good and evil in the human world, killing the guilty, and punishing those who are disloyal, ungrateful, unkind, and unjust, as well as demons and evil spirits. He is the executor of the righteous order of heaven. In folk belief, thunder strikes are regarded as “Divine Punishment”.

Exorcising Evil and Removing Demons: Specialized in eliminating evil spirits, especially having a special restraining effect on venomous snakes, centipedes, and other poisonous insect and demonic creatures.
