The Nine Heaven Yinzhong Leisheng Puhuai Tianzun is one of the main deities of the Thunder Division in Taoism. He holds the position of the supreme deity of the Thunder Division and is known as “Nine Heaven Yinzhong Leisheng Puhuai Tianzun”, or simply “Tianzu” or “Leisheng Tianzun”. “Nine Heaven” refers to the nine layers of heaven in the upper realm, symbolizing supreme authority; “Yinzhong” means to conform to the fundamental principles of heaven and follow the will of heaven to transform; “Leisheng” symbolizes the thunder’s power and the warning of the will of heaven; “Puhuai” means to universally educate and rescue all beings. His full title shows his functions of governing thunder, rewarding good deeds and punishing evil, and universally benefiting all beings. In the Taoist belief system, the Thunder God is not an ordinary natural deity, but an embodiment of the judicial and supervisory power in the celestial realm. The Nine Heaven Yinzhong Leisheng Puhuai Tianzun governs the thirty-six generals of the Thunder Division, presides over “Leisheng Dianmu”, “Five Thunder Messengers”, and the gods of the Thunder Division, and enforces the laws of thunder to punish evil, expel demons, and eliminate disasters, maintaining the order of heaven and earth. In Taoist teachings, the Tianzun can break off disputes through the Thunder Method, resolve grievances, and protect believers from disasters. Therefore, he is not only a martial god that intimidates evil spirits, but also a teaching god that grants forgiveness and bestows blessings. His name first took a systematic form in the Taoist classics of the Song and Yuan dynasties. After the Song Dynasty, the Thunder Method flourished, and many sects within Taoism all honored Tianzu as the main deity. Taoist rituals include “Thunder Method”, “Thunder Command”, and “Thunder Books”, which claim to summon Tianzu to issue commands, dispatch the gods of the Thunder Division, and carry out celestial punishments and earthly excommunications. Especially in the sects of Zhengyi, Shangqing, and Lingbao, the Nine Heaven Yinzhong Leisheng Puhuai Tianzun is revered as the “highest Tianzun of the Thunder Division”, symbolizing boundless divine power and incomprehensible celestial might.

The classics record that the Tianzun attained enlightenment in the upper realm and received an imperial decree from the Jade Emperor, governing the thunder in the three realms, specifically responsible for inspecting the good and evil in the human world, promulgating celestial laws, and recording good and bad deeds. It is said that he manifests as a majestic form, wearing a nine-heaven crown, wearing a celestial robe, holding a golden whip or a thunder command, and having the Thunder God, the Electric Mother, the Wind Spirit, and the Rain Spirit, among others, as his attendants on both sides, with his voice resonating throughout the universe. Some say that his true form is an invisible Taoization, often appearing in the world as thunder and lightning. The Thunder Method is passed down strictly in Taoism and is known as “Thunder Command makes all gods tremble”. The Zhengyi, Maoshan, Lushan, and Sichuan Qingcheng Thunder Methods all honor the Nine Heaven Yinzhong Leisheng Puhuai Tianzun as the highest deity. Priests need to receive “Thunder Command” before they can practice the method. Their talismans and magical techniques often bear the title “Nine Heaven Yinzhong Leisheng Puhuai Tianzun”, claiming that they can command the generals of the Thunder Division, cause wind and thunder to collide, exterminate demons and spirits, and eliminate misfortunes and disasters. Folklore also tells of simplified rituals such as “Thunder God Paper Making” and “Thunder Method Talismans”, seeking the protection of the Tianzun. The Thunder Method classics in the Daoist Canon are numerous, such as “Thunder Jade Scripture”, “The Jade Scripture of the Nine Heaven Yinzhong Leisheng Puhuai Tianzun”, “The Great Law of Three Five to Destroy Evil”, and “The Supreme Nine Heaven Yixiao Jade Clear Great Supreme Purple Microcosmic Heaven Thunder Jade Scripture”. All of these scriptures regard the Tianzun as the supreme deity who holds the power to govern thunder, subdue demons, break off grievances, and protect the country and people. The Nine Heaven Yinzhong Leisheng Puhuai Tianzun is the most important Thunder God in the Taoist system, symbolizing celestial might and justice, specifically responsible for thunder punishments and rewards, universal salvation of all beings, and resolving grievances and releasing bonds. He is the celestial law enforcer and the guardian deity in the world. Taoists regard him as their teacher deity and practice the Thunder Method to benefit the world; the people honor him as the Thunder God, praying for peace and clarity.
