The Ten Divine Kings are also known as “Taiyi Ten Divine Kings” or “Yinlei Ten Divine Kings”. They are ten revered deities in Taoism who are in charge of the Taixue Thunder Technique, governing natural disasters and calamities, and protecting the well-being of the human world. The full name of these ten divine kings is “Wufu Taiyi True King”, “Tianyi Taiyi True King”, “Tieyi True King”, “Sifeng Taiyi True King”, “Daliuchang Taiyi True King”, “Xiaochang Taiyi True King”, “Junji Taiyi True King”, “Chenji Taiyi True King”, “Minji Taiyi True King”, and “Zhihuifu Taiyi True King”.
The belief in these ten divine kings originated from the ancient “Taiyi” worship. Taiyi originally was the god of the North Star, and gradually evolved into the core deity of Taoism. The Ten Divine Kings are the fractals of Taiyi God and are regarded as the embodiment of “the Qi of the Eleven Constellations”. They hold a crucial position in the Taoist thunder technique system and are responsible for “preventing natural disasters in the sky, eliminating calamities on the earth, and maintaining the well-being of the people”. They maintain the balance of the three realms of heaven, earth, and man.
In terms of functions, the Ten Divine Kings are primarily responsible for eliminating natural disasters, regulating wind, rain, thunder, and lightning, resolving imbalances of water and fire, and quelling geological disasters such as earthquakes and landslides. They also eliminate major calamities such as wars and plagues, epidemics and famines, and harmonize the five elements and yin-yang, ensuring the normal flow of time. In the field of thunder techniques, they are also known as “Yinlei Ten Divine Kings”, being the vanguard of the thunder gods. They are in charge of “initiating thunder and capturing electricity, with a light that spreads across the ten thousand miles, suppressing heaven and earth”. They can pray for rain, snow, hail, and other precipitation, meet the needs of agriculture and people’s livelihoods, and also eliminate evil spirits that possess evil spirits and other disturbances. As the forerunners of the gods of the thunder department descending to the mortal realm, “The Ten Star Commanders dare not descend to the Dautian without being led by the Ten Divine Kings”. In addition, they also undertake the responsibility of guiding the souls of the dead, initiating the process of universal salvation and recommendation in the underworld, assisting the deceased to escape from suffering, and supervising the order of the underworld. They can “drag the evil spirits to the Hualing List of Corpses and execute them”, and manage the life records of people, determining their merits and demerits and lifespan.

The images and talismans of the Ten Divine Kings have their own characteristics. Detailed records can be found in Volume 133 of “Dao Fa Hui Yuan”: The Five-Fu True King has a red face and a dignified appearance, holding a thunder pearl, and is in charge of the blessings of the human world; Junji True King has a square face and a regal air, holding a thunder wedge, guarding the stability of the state; Chenji True King has a upright face and the appearance of an official, holding a thunder axe, regulating the principles of the court; Minji True King has a kind face, resembling the appearance of a commoner, holding a thunder ring, protecting the well-being of the people; Xiaochang True King has a sharp face and agility, holding a spear, responsible for inspecting the three realms; Daliuchang True King has a broad face and a bold air, holding a spear and a sword, in charge of eliminating evil spirits; Tianyi True King has a smooth face and the appearance of a divine being, holding a golden spear, governing the order of the heaven; Tieyi True King has a simple face and the appearance of a deity, holding a golden blade, maintaining the peace of the earth; Zhihuifu True King has a solemn face and the appearance of an official, holding a feathered scroll, transmitting divine orders; Taiyi True King has a mysterious face and the demeanor of a dignitary, holding a feathered scroll, overseeing the affairs of the ten divine kings.
In the Taoist system, the Ten Divine Kings belong to the “Taiyi Biyu Neiyuan” and are “supervised by the Heavenly Emperor”. They are listed in the “Six Dao Commanding the Heavenly Orders Department”. Their functions cover “dividing the boundaries of water and fire, and matters related to ghosts and gods in the world”. Whenever a divine king presides over a certain division of the boundaries, they dominate the course of disasters and blessings in that area. In important rituals and ceremonies, they are often listed together with the Three Kings, Four Admirals, Taiyi Salvation-Seeking Heavenly Lord, etc., and are indispensable core deities in the auspicious and calamitous prayer and exorcism ceremonies.
The belief in the Ten Divine Kings embodies the core concept of “Tianren Unity” in Taoism, closely linking celestial movements with human disasters and blessings. In folk beliefs, they are regarded as all-powerful good gods who can guide auspiciousness and avoid disasters. They are highly revered by officials, common people, and practitioners of the thunder techniques. In religious practice, chanting the “Ten Divine Kings” title can achieve the effect of “preventing natural disasters in the sky and eliminating calamities on the earth”; their taboo names are used in Taoist secret symbols to enhance the effect of warding off evil spirits and praying for safety; in large-scale Rongtian Da Jiao and other ceremonies, the positions of the Ten Divine Kings are often set up to pray for national peace and good weather. Compared with other deities, the difference between the Ten Divine Kings and the Thunder Department Heaven King lies in that the former is the god of “guiding thunder”, focusing on the guidance and dispatch of thunder sounds, while the latter, such as Deng Tian King and Xin Tian King, are the specific executors who carry out the lightning strikes and punish evil spirits. Compared with the Eight Constellations Heaven Kings, both of them are important components of the Taoist star deity system. The Eight Constellations Heaven Kings are in charge of “regulating life and death, eliminating disasters and relieving misfortunes”, while the Ten Divine Kings are in charge of “natural disasters and earth disasters, protecting the country and the people”. Their functions complement each other, jointly safeguarding the peace and stability of the world.

The Ten Divine Kings, as important carriers of Taoist Taixi beliefs and thunder magic systems, embody the salvation concept of Taoism, “using thunder methods to reveal the heart of the Bodhisattva”. They not only intimidate evil spirits with authority but also protect the people with compassion. They are a vivid manifestation of the Taoist “interaction between heaven and man” ideology. The symbolic meaning of “eliminating disasters and accepting blessings, calming evil spirits and stabilizing the country” is suitable for use in the design of Taoist cultural products such as protective accessories and house-holding ornaments, conveying the beautiful expectations of protecting peace and achieving prosperity and good fortune.
