King Jinghai is the core deity in the Taoist water god system who governs the “Four Great Rivers” (the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, the Huai River, and the Ji River). He was appointed by the Jade Emperor and is under the jurisdiction of the Water God and the Supreme Thunder God, the Primordial Thunder God of the Nine Heavens. He receives instructions from the Heavenly Court and the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas, and commands the river gods of the Four Great Rivers. He is a key link connecting the macro management of water areas and the local governance of rivers. His core responsibilities include maintaining the stability of the Four Great Rivers, coordinating waterways, conveying the will of heaven, and protecting the livelihoods of people along the rivers and agricultural irrigation.

The origin of identity and system positioning

The belief in the King of Wells and Seas originated from the worship of ancient mountains, rivers and waterways. After being incorporated into the Taoist pantheon, it was clearly defined as the overall leader of the Four Great Rivers, dispatched by the Heavenly Court. Unlike the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas and the Five Emperors’ Dragon Kings, he is not of dragon descent but is held by immortals. Although they have no kinship, they cooperate in their duties. In the hierarchy of deities, the King of Wells and Seas ranks below the Five Emperors’ Dragon Kings and the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas but above the local water deities of rivers, lakes and wells. He is equivalent to the “Governor of the Four Great Rivers”, responsible for communication and resource allocation, ensuring the stability of the Four Great Rivers system. He is an important water deity, alongside the “Source Kings of the Four Great Rivers”, in ancient state rituals.

Core Clergy and Responsibilities

Supervising the Four Great Rivers’ Deities: Directly managing the deities of the Yangtze River (Guangyuan Shunji King), the Yellow River (Lingyuan Hongji King), the Huai River (Changyuan Boji King), and the Ji River (Qingyuan Puji King), supervising their duties, coordinating the water distribution among the four rivers, and preventing water-related conflicts and disasters.

Conveying Heavenly Mandates and Dispatching Forces: Acting on the orders of the Heavenly Court and the Four Dragon Kings of the Seas, issuing instructions to the deities of the four rivers regarding rainfall, flood control, and drought relief. In emergencies, they can temporarily dispatch the water army to quell the disturbances caused by water monsters or human violations of the water domain’s authority.

Maintaining Waterways and Livelihoods: Inspecting the waterways of the four rivers, ensuring the safety of shipping and the availability of water for agricultural irrigation, mediating water disputes, and safeguarding the lives and property of the cities and people along the rivers. They are important guardians of “water stability” in agricultural civilization.

Monitoring Water Order: Supervising the aquatic creatures in the four rivers and their surrounding waters, preventing them from causing trouble and endangering the human world, and ensuring the ecological balance and natural order of the water systems.
