The Eastern Emperor, also known as “Mu Gong” or “Eastern Heavenly Lord”, is the supreme deity in Chinese mythology and Taoism, responsible for the east, the yang energy, and male immortals. He is often compared with the Western Queen Mother (Jin Mother), representing the yang and the yin in the universe respectively, and jointly maintaining the balance and order of the world. The image and evolution of the Eastern Emperor originated from the ancient worship of the sun and the belief in the gods of the east. In early records such as the Han Dynasty’s “Shen Yi Jing”, he was described as a god living in a stone chamber, with a human form, bird face, and tiger tail, corresponding to the Western Queen Mother. Later, Taoism absorbed and elevated this belief, and he was revered as “Eastern Huadu Zufu Shaoyang Emperor”, governing the yang and air, and commanding all the male immortals in the world. Over time, the Eastern Emperor gradually merged with the patriarch “Eastern Huadu Emperor” worshipped by the Quanzhen Taoism, and his status became even more prominent.

The core duties of the Eastern Emperor are to govern the east and the yang energy. The east symbolizes the rising sun, spring, and growth, so he is also regarded as the source of all life’s emergence and rejuvenation. In the Taoist divine system, all the male deities who have achieved enlightenment must first pay homage to the Eastern Emperor at the Eastern Huadu Zufu, and after being evaluated and classified by him, they can officially be listed in the celestial ranks. In addition, he and the Western Queen Mother jointly regulate the yin and yang energies to maintain the harmonious operation of the universe. In folk beliefs, the Eastern Emperor is also endowed with the functions of bestowing longevity and protecting offspring. In Taoism and folk culture, the Eastern Emperor is often depicted as an elegant and transcendent celestial lord in the celestial realm. Although his popularity in the folk is slightly inferior to that of the Western Queen Mother, the Eastern Emperor always occupies an irreplaceable position in the Taoist pantheon and traditional culture. In general, the Eastern Emperor is not only a deity governing the east and the yang energy, but also a symbol of “yang” in Chinese philosophy, embodying the ancient people’s profound understanding of the operation of the universe and the harmony of yin and yang. His belief still continues to be passed down in Taoist and some folk activities to this day.
