Five Directional Ghost Emperors

The Five-Dragon Ghost Emperors are five deities who govern the five directions of the underworld in the Taoist celestial realm system. They are subordinate to the King of Fengdu and together with the Ten Heavenly Kings form the core management structure of the underworld. They are responsible for the judgment of ghosts in the five directions and the maintenance of the order of the underworld. They are the key masters who connect the main headquarters of Fengdu with the various underworld divisions across different regions.
The concept of the Five-Dragon Ghost Emperors originated from the Taoist cosmology of “Five Directions and Five Elements”. They correspond to the five directions – east, south, west, north, and center – and each guards a specific underworld region. Their names and jurisdictions are recorded in Taoist scriptures such as “The Book of the Immortals of the Primordial Supreme True Spirit” and “The Pillow Book”. The details are as follows: The Eastern Ghost Emperor Cai Yuelu and Shen Tou guard the Peach Blossom Mountain and are in charge of the eastern underworld region. Folk legends say that the two were the earliest prototypes of the door gods and could catch ghosts and drive away evil spirits to prevent them from escaping to the human world. The Southern Ghost Emperor Du Ziren guards Luofu Mountain and is in charge of the southern underworld region. They are responsible for judging the good and evil deeds of the deceased souls in the southern region and determining their reincarnation path. The Western Ghost Emperor Zhao Wenhe and Wang Zhenren guard the Bongzong Mountain and are in charge of the western underworld region. They are in charge of punishing the evil souls who have committed many sins and impose corresponding punishments on them. The Northern Ghost Emperor Zhang Heng and Yang Yun guard Lu Feng Mountain. Lu Feng Mountain is one of the key areas of the Taoist underworld. The two assist the King of Fengdu in handling core underworld affairs and hold an especially important position. They assist the King of Fengdu in handling the judgment work of the four ghosts and balancing the order of the five underworlds, as well as supervising the reincarnation and transfer process of the deceased souls. The Central Ghost Emperor Zhou Qi and Ji Kang guard Baodu Mountain and are in charge of the central underworld region. They are responsible for coordinating the judgment work of the four ghosts and balancing the order of the underworld. At the same time, they supervise the reincarnation and transfer process of the deceased souls.

The core functions of the Five-Dragon Ghost Emperors mainly include three aspects: First, territorial jurisdiction, dividing the underworld into five regions to prevent the chaos of wandering ghosts and ensure the order of the underworld; second, preliminary review and judgment, before the deceased souls are finally judged by the Ten Heavenly Kings, they are preliminarily verified for their good and evil deeds and classified and registered; third, suppressing evil spirits and driving away evil forces, suppressing evil spirits and evil ghosts in their respective regions to prevent them from causing disturbances and invading the human world.
In terms of image portrayal, the Five-Dragon Ghost Emperors are different from the solemn and imposing Ten Heavenly Kings and do not resemble the fierce appearance of the ghost attendants. They are mostly depicted as deities wearing dark-colored or corresponding color official robes. The Eastern Ghost Emperor wears a green robe, the Southern Ghost Emperor wears a red robe, the Western Ghost Emperor wears a white robe, the Northern Ghost Emperor wears a black robe, and the Central Ghost Emperor wears a yellow robe. They hold the ghost-catching cards, life and death books, or warding-off evil tools, and have a calm and unemotional expression, exuding an authoritative power while also embodying the impartiality of “punishing evil and protecting the good”.
In Taoist sacrificial rituals and ceremonies, the funeral ceremonies to release deceased souls often summon the Five-Dragon Ghost Emperors to arrive, praying for their release of the deceased souls, reducing their punishments, and helping them to quickly pass to the good path in the underworld. In folk beliefs, people believe that worshipping the Five-Dragon Ghost Emperors can protect the ancestors’ souls in the underworld from being bullied, while also deterring evil spirits and protecting the peace of the home.
The Five-Dragon Ghost Emperors hold a position lower than the King of Fengdu but higher than the Ten Heavenly Kings and all levels of ghost attendants in the underworld system. They are key managers who connect the upper and lower levels and play a crucial role as intermediaries. They cooperate with the underworld system under the command of the Eastern Mountain God Emperor to maintain the celestial cycle order of “good deeds in the human world lead to blessings, evil deeds in the underworld lead to punishment”.
