All the Spiritual Officers of the Heavenly Medical Department

The Heavenly Medical Officials of the Various Spirits are a professional medical staff group under the Taichang Heavenly Hospital of Taoism. They are directly under the jurisdiction of the Heavenly Medical Department and are led by the True Lord of Heavenly Medicine. Their core functions include diagnosing and treating diseases in both the human world and the spirit realm, preparing medicines and herbs, expelling evil spirits and performing healing, as well as managing rituals for blessing and disaster relief, and ensuring the well-being of souls. They are the key operational layer of the Taoist medical and salvation system.
Core Composition and Duties
According to the “Lingbao Teaching and Blessing Golden Book” and other scriptures, the common celestial officials have clearly defined roles and responsibilities:
The Heavenly Doctor and Medicine Official: Responsible for the collection and preparation of medicinal herbs, as well as the review of prescriptions. He is the leader among all the celestial officials.
The Chief of Diagnosis and Observation Official: Diagnosing diseases, identifying causes and symptoms, similar to the “pulse diagnosis and disease identification” role.
The Official for Prescribing Medicines Based on Symptoms: Mixing and preparing medicines according to symptoms, harmonizing the properties of the drugs, and customizing exclusive prescriptions.
The Official for Manufacturing and Training: Responsible for the preparation of elixirs and the processing of medicinal materials, ensuring the purity of the medicine.
The Official for Examining the Pulse and Analyzing Diseases: Proficient in the principles of pulse diagnosis, judging the functions of the internal organs and the qi, and guiding the direction of diagnosis and treatment.
The Official for Applying Medicines and Treating Diseases: Executing external treatments such as applying ointments and acupuncture, assisting in the intake of decoctions.
The Official for Bone Setting and Acupuncture / Fan Hou Official: Responsible for ancient methods of treatment such as bone setting and acupuncture, preserving the ancient medical techniques.
The Immortal Medicine Boy / Herbal Medicine Boy: Responsible for collecting medicinal herbs from the sacred mountains, ensuring the supply of medicinal materials.
There are also officials such as the Official for Treating Diseases, the Commander for Removing Toxins, the Doctor for Forming Forms, etc., who work together to handle difficult diseases, remove evil spirits, and restore the body.

Image and Symbolism
The images of the celestial officials are mostly elegant immortals dressed in blue, white, or red Taoist robes or light gold official attire. They have gentle faces, wear jade crowns or Huayang caps, hold medicinal staffs, jade rods, pulse pillows, silver needles and other ritual implements. Some statues are equipped with medicinal bags, herbs, and furnace patterns, highlighting the benevolent heart and the characteristics of the Taoist path of these healers. They do not have the fierce appearance of the guardian celestial officials, nor the solemnity of the celestial officials, but rather exhibit an approachable and compassionate demeanor for alleviating suffering.
Religious Ceremonies and Sacrifices
Daoist Rituals: In rituals for warding off evil, treating diseases, and purifying souls, Taoist priests will set up a “Heavenly Doctor Screen”, summoning the celestial officials to descend and administer medicine to cure diseases, purify evil spirits, and restore the soul, especially in the Yellow Classic Prayer, Transcending Prayer, and Reincarnation Prayer, they often cooperate with the Official for Reincarnation and Soul Restoration, helping the deceased souls to restore their form and escape suffering.

Popular Sacrifices: When people encounter difficult and complicated diseases or epidemics, they will burn incense and pray at the Heavenly Doctor Temple, asking the celestial officials to grant medicine to cure the disease; in some areas, on the Heavenly Doctor’s Festival (usually the third day of the third lunar month or the ninth day of the ninth lunar month), they hold temple fairs to pray for health and longevity.
Status and Cultural Significance
The status of the celestial officials in the Heavenly Doctor Department is lower than the Heavenly Doctor Master and the Divine Power and Great Blessing Heavenly Lord (such as Sun Simiao, Xu Xun), but higher than the local herbal medicine masters and witch doctors. They work together with the officials of the Thunder Department and the Pestilence Department to jointly maintain the healthy order of the three realms. Their beliefs reflect the Taoist concept of “valuing life”, combining medical skills with the Taoist path, which is both the deification of traditional medicine and the embodiment of ancient people’s pursuit of health and longevity.
