The Fire Department Deity Kings of Taoism constitute a divine group system that governs the fire department and is in charge of the fire virtue. With the Fire Virtue Deity King (the Great Fire Official) as the core, it includes multiple ancient fire deities and functional deities. In the Taoist cosmology, they are in charge of the fire operation, harmonizing yin and yang, and protecting the safety of fire use in alchemy and the human world.
According to the “Lingbao Leading Teaching and Salvation Golden Book”, the core members of the Fire Department Deity Kings include Fire Ancestor Shiren Deity King, Fire Ancestor Yan Di Deity King, Fire Chief Yabao True Official, Fire God Shourong Deity King, Fire God Huilu Deity King, Fire Qi Yuwo Deity King, Southern Red Spirit Deity King, etc. Among them, Fire Ancestor Shiren Deity King is the inventor of artificial fire-making, initiating the fire civilization and protecting the safety of human fire use; Fire Ancestor Yan Di Deity King is Shennong, the Southern Red Emperor, in charge of nurturing all things and the summer fire governance; Fire Chief Yabao True Official is an ancient fire chief, also the god of the Shang star, in charge of astronomy and calendar and folk fire prohibitions; Fire God Shourong Deity King is a descendant of Emperor Huangdi, the Southern Sea god, in charge of celestial and earth fire, capable of driving away evil spirits and suppressing malevolent forces; Fire God Huilu Deity King focuses on fire prevention and eliminating fires in the world; Fire Qi Yuwo Deity King is the embodiment of the essence of fire, holding the flame qi and harmonizing the fire movement in the world; Southern Red Spirit Deity King is the symbol of the southern fire virtue, governing the southern fire qi, and protecting the alchemical practice. In addition, the full name of the Fire Virtue Deity King is Southern Three Qi Fire Virtue Yinghuo Law Enforcement Star Deity King, corresponding to Yinghuo Star, which is also Mars. It is the main deity of the Fire Department, jointly governing the fire affairs with Huaguang Great Deity (Ma Tian Deity, the General of Fire Department Army), with the former focusing on maintaining the order of fire use and the latter focusing on suppressing fires and reducing disasters. Their core functions are divided into three aspects: First, the natural function, governing the fire in the sky and the Vermilion Bird God, leading the growth of all things, the reproduction of insects and birds, and harmonizing the balance of the fire element and the qi of the south; Second, the human function, supervising the good and evil in the human world, governing disasters, diseases, and rewards and punishments of fortune and misfortune, protecting alchemical practice, metallurgy, and cooking and other industries that use fire, and can also be used for warding off fires, driving locusts away, and suppressing evil spirits in Taoist rituals and ceremonies; Third, the spiritual realm function, using the fire qi to illuminate the darkness and assisting the underworld judgment, intimidating evil spirits and evil ghosts.
In the Taoist system, the Fire Department Deity Kings belong to the Shenxiao Thunder Law and the Five Directions Five Virtue Star Deity System, being one of the seven planetary star deities besides the Sun Deity and the Moon Deity. They are under the jurisdiction of the Jade Emperor and the Southern Longevity Great Deity, often working in coordination with the Thunder Department and the Pest Department deities. Their beliefs originated from ancient fire deity worship, integrating star worship and folk beliefs. During the Tang and Song dynasties, they gradually took shape and became the core deities of Taoist fire sacrifices and disaster relief rituals.
The traditional worship of the Fire Department Deity Kings by the people has a long history. The Christmas of the Fire Virtue Deity King is the 23rd of June in the lunar calendar. The common folk and industries that use fire, such as smelting, catering, and fire protection, often offer incense, fresh fruits, and purified water as offerings to pray for avoiding fires, prosperous business, and so on. The Fire Department Deity Kings symbolize light, purification, punishment, and rebirth, representing the elimination of darkness, purification of karma, and protection of righteous energy. They are the embodiment of the Taoist concept of “using fire to suppress evil”. In Taoist cultural jewelry design, elements of the Fire Department Deity Kings are often used in protective pendants and household altar items, and are endowed with the meanings of suppressing evil spirits, fire virtue protection, and prosperous business, suitable for people who often deal with fire or engage in creative and pioneering work to wear. The Fire Department Deity Kings and other Fire Department deities also have clear distinctions. For example, the Fire Virtue Deity King and Huaguang Great Deity, the two are the “one master and one commander” relationship of the Fire Department, the Fire Virtue Deity King is in charge of “using fire” and harmonizing, while Huaguang Great Deity is in charge of “suppressing fire” and driving away pests, working together to protect the fire affairs in the world. The Emperor of the Fire Department and the Fire God of the Thunder Department respectively govern “ordinary fire” and the order of daily use of fire. The latter, such as Wang Lingquan, is in charge of “divine fire” and the thunderbolt fire, which is often used for eliminating demons, punishing evil, and promoting good deeds.
