The Nine Celestial Deities are a divine system composed of nine celestial emperors in ancient Chinese mythology, derived from the Taoist classics “The Great Law of the Upper Clearness” and “The Golden Book of the Instruction and Salvation of the Divine Essence”. They were formed by the differentiation of the three primordial energies, namely, the Tao, the Yuan, and the Sheng. The first three deities were born from the Sheng energy, the middle three deities from the Yuan energy, and the last three deities from the Tao energy.

These nine celestial deities are as follows: Yudan Wumian Heavenly Emperor, Shangshang Chanshan Wumian Shengnian Heavenly Emperor, Banjian Xuanyan Heavenly Emperor, Ziru Duoshi Heavenly Emperor, Boloni Min Jiaojue Heavenly Emperor, Dongyuan Huaxing Heavenly Emperor, Linghua Banfu Heavenly Emperor, Gaoxu Qingtian Heavenly Emperor, and Wuxiang Wuxie Wuai Heavenly Emperor. In Taoist beliefs, the Nine Celestial Deities are regarded as the supreme beings, whose power and wisdom influence the rise and fall and destiny of the world. Ancient people believed that there were nine layers of heaven, and each layer had its own ruler. The Nine Celestial Deities were the rulers of these nine layers of heaven. Additionally, there is the saying that “a person acquires the qi of nine heavens to become a deity”, suggesting that the fetus receives one day’s qi each month in the womb, and when the qi of nine months is full, the deity is born and becomes an adult.
