The True Spirits of the Six Heavenly Palaces in Luofeng

Also known as the Immortals of the Six Heavenly Palaces, the True Spirits of the Six Heavenly Palaces of Luofeng are six netherworld rulers subordinate to the Great Emperor of Northern Yin Fengdu in the Taoist underworld system. According to Taoist scriptures such as Declarations of the Perfected and Elucidating the Subtle Secrets of the Netherworld, they reside in the six heavenly palaces on Mount Luofeng in the Gui region of the North. Each of these palaces has a corresponding counterpart in the caves above and below the mountain. Together, they preside over the judgment of the deceased, the determination of sins and blessings, the enforcement of punishments, and the process of reincarnation. They form the Taoist netherworld governance system centered on the principle of “good and evil shall receive their due rewards”, and are also important objects of folk belief for warding off evil spirits, calming souls, and overcoming misfortunes.
The six True Spirits have clear-cut divisions of labor, forming a complete closed-loop process for handling the souls of the deceased:
The True Spirit of the Zhoujue Yinyin Heavenly Palace takes charge of the preliminary trial of the deceased, verifies the severity of their sins committed in the mortal world, and determines the initial punishment, serving as the first judicial checkpoint for souls entering the netherworld.
The True Spirit of the Taisha Liangshi Zong Heavenly Palace specializes in calculating karmic retribution, defines the abundance of blessings and fortune as well as the trajectory of destiny in the next life, setting the tone for the deceased’s future reincarnation.
The True Spirit of the Mingchen Naifan Wucheng Heavenly Palace is responsible for suppressing ferocious ghosts and carrying out severe punishments, meting out retribution to those souls that committed heinous acts and remained unrepentant in the mortal world, thus upholding the authority of heavenly principles through punishment.
The True Spirit of the Tianzhao Zuiqi Heavenly Palace undertakes the duty of purifying the resentful qi of the deceased and granting absolution to help them transcend suffering, assisting souls with minor sins to wash away their transgressions, attain liberation at an early date, and move toward rebirth.
The True Spirit of the Zongling Qifei Heavenly Palace supervises all officials of the netherworld at every level, investigates unjust judgments, and punishes the “seven unrighteous deeds” that violate the laws of heaven and earth, safeguarding the order and fairness of the underworld.
The True Spirit of the Gansi Lianwan Lü Heavenly Palace is governed by the Northern Bright Duke Wu Jizha. It holds the power over the reincarnation of the deceased, verifying the direction of their next incarnation, symbolizing the end of a soul’s journey in the netherworld and the beginning of a new life.
Taoism holds that people who know the names of the gates of the six heavenly palaces can keep all ghosts at bay. In folk traditions, people often recite their titles during sacrifices to pray for blessings and ward off evil spirits.
