Twenty-Four Dharma-Protecting Heavenly Lords Who Hasten Clouds and Assist Rainfall

The twenty-four Fengyun Zhuyu Guhufa Tianjun are important deities of the Taoist Thunder Sect, subordinate to the Nine Heaven Yingyuan Leisheng Puhua Tianzun (Leishen Wenzhong). They are mainly responsible for assisting in managing natural phenomena such as thunder and rain, ensuring a bountiful harvest and eliminating disasters on earth. Their images and duties mainly come from the records in the Ming Dynasty novel “Fengshen Yanyi”.

Main members and characteristics

1. Deng Tianjun Deng Zhong

Responsibility: Law and Order Great God, Commander of the Front Hall of the Thunder Sect, responsible for enforcing the laws of the Thunder Sect. He is a core general of the Thunder Sect. 2. Xin Tianjun Xin Huan

Responsibility: Thunder and Lightning Correct Order Great God, responsible for executing the orders of the Thunder Sect, and in charge of distributing thunder and rain. Title: Bu Feng Mengli Yin Yaguai Xin Tianjun, Thunder and Lightning Thirty-third Heaven Grand Commander Qing Di Tianzun.

3. Zhang Tianjun Zhang Jie

Responsibility: Thunder and Lightning Execution Order Great God, responsible for transmitting the orders of the Thunder Sect, and inspecting human goodness and evil. Image: Holding a long spear, riding a black dragon. Title: Lingtai Liuzheng Feijiebao Zhang Shiwei, Taiyi Jieji Diyu Shiwei.

4. Tao Tianjun Tao Rong

Responsibility: Heavenly Doctor Great God, responsible for driving away evil spirits and treating diseases, and also in charge of the weather. Image: Skilled in using double maces, possessing the magic weapon “Juying Fan”, which can attract wind and gather clouds. Title: Hengyuan Tianyi Doctor Tao Tianjun, Thunder and Heaven Doctor Five Thunder Tao Tianjun.

5. Pang Tianjun Pang Hong (Pang Hong)

Responsibility: Heavenly Spirit Correct Commander, responsible for investigating demons and punishing evil. Image: Face like bright lacquer, red like flames, holding two silver maces, riding an black horse. Title: Hengqi Pang Yuanshi, Thunder God, Destroying Evil God King.

6. Liu Tianjun Liu Fu

Responsibility: Nine Yang Supreme Commander, responsible for supervising the implementation of the weather, thunder, and lightning, and maintaining the order of the Thunder Sect, as a law enforcement official of the Heavenly Court. 7. Guo Tianjun Guo Zhang

Responsibility: Divine Fiery Thunder, responsible for destroying demons and evil spirits, inspecting the human world. 8. Bi Tianjun Bi Huan

Responsibility： Divineization Yin Thunder， responsible for eliminating evil and slaying demons， protecting the Thunder Sect. 9. Qin Tianjun Qin Wan

10. Zhao Tianjun Zhao Jiang

11. Dong Tianjun Dong Quan

12. Yuan Tianjun Yuan Jiao

13. Lightning God (Golden Light Holy Mother)

Responsibility： Responsible for lightning， illuminating the darkness and warning the world. Original name： Xiwenying (Some say Zhu Peimang)， “Golden Light Array” Array Leader.

14. Aidong God (Huanzhi Xian)

Responsibility： Responsible for managing the functions of the wind spirit， assisting the Thunder Sect gods in controlling the size and direction of the wind. 15. Sun Tianjun Sun Liang

17. Wang Tianjun Wang Bian

18. Yao Tianjun Yao Bin (Yao Bin)

Responsibilities: Chief of the Thunder Department, “Fallen Soul Array” Master, responsible for capturing souls and eliminating demons. Appearance: Holding a steel mace, the magic weapon is a white paper banner, and the mount is a yellow-spotted deer. Training Ground: Donghai Jinnao Island.

19. Zhang Tianjun Zhang Shao

Responsibilities: Chief of the Thunder Department, “Red Sand Array” Master, responsible for distributing sand and reducing disasters. Appearance: Holding a Kun Gang sword, the mount is an plum blossom deer. Training Ground: Donghai Jinnao Island.

20. Jin Tianjun Jin Su

Responsibilities: Responsible for conducting wind and cloud movements, assisting in rainfall. Title: Xun Erang, Feng Shen, Feng Bo.

21. Huang Tianjun Huang Geng

Responsibilities: Responsible for distributing fog, assisting in rainfall. Title: Bu Wu Langjun, Bu Wu Tongzi.

22. Li Tianjun Li De

Responsibilities: Responsible for pushing clouds, assisting in rainfall. Title: Pushing Cloud Tongzi, Cloud God, Cloud Middle King.

23. Ji Tianjun Ji Li

Responsibilities: Thunder Department Guard, responsible for protecting the safety of the Thunder Grand Master. Appearance: Holding a five-hooked bright silver sword, the mount is a yellow-brown horse. Identity: Wenyun’s personal disciple.

24. Yu Tianjun Yu Qing

Responsibilities: Thunder Department Guard, responsible for protecting the safety of the Thunder Grand Master. Appearance: Holding a Binded Iron Watermelon Hammer, the mount is a yellow-brown horse. Identity: Wenyun’s personal disciple.

Overall Responsibilities and Characteristics

These twenty-four Heaven Kings each have their own strengths, together forming the core team of the Thunder Department. Under the leadership of the Nine Heavens Yingyuan Thunder Sound Pragmatizing Heavenly Lord Wenyun, they are responsible for:

Stimulating clouds and facilitating rain: Regulating wind, rain, thunder and lightning to ensure a harmonious climate and bountiful harvests on Earth。

Protecting the law and eliminating demons: Inspecting the good and evil in the human world, eliminating evil spirits and demons, and maintaining the order of heaven and earth。

Enacting decrees and exerting power: Acting on behalf of heaven to execute the decrees of the Thunder Department, punishing evil-doers and rewarding good people。

Treating diseases and providing relief: Some Heaven Kings are also in charge of medicine, diseases, and water and fire disasters, protecting the people’s livelihood.

The Taoist believe that constantly chanting the “Nine Heavens Yingyuan Thunder Sound Pragmatizing Heavenly Lord Jade Treasure Scripture” can eliminate disasters and overcome misfortunes， and June 24th is the feast day of the Thunder Sound Pragmatizing Heavenly Lord. In Taoist temples， the five Yuanshen of the Thunder Department are often worshipped： Deng Zhong， Xin Huan， Zhang Ji， Gou Zhang， Bi Huan. They are regarded as the most important guardian gods of the Thunder Department.

Cultural Significance

The twenty-four Heaven Kings who facilitate clouds and rain， and protect the law are an embodiment of the “Heaven-Man Unity” thought in Chinese traditional culture. People believe that through the protection of these deities， they can obtain a harmonious climate， national peace and people’s well-being. In Taoist rituals and ceremonies， these Heaven Kings are often summoned to descend and pray for eliminating disasters and overcoming misfortunes， providing rainfall and drought relief， or driving away demons and treating diseases.
