The Supreme Mother of the Stars
Doumu Yuanshun, also known as Doulao Yuanshun, is one of the highest-ranking goddesses in the Taoist pantheon. She is revered as the “Mother of All Stars” and the supreme deity who governs celestial movements, destiny, fortune, disasters, and longevity.

She is often depicted seated upon a celestial throne or riding a divine chariot pulled by seven sacred creatures. Her multi-faced and multi-armed appearance symbolizes her limitless power to oversee heaven, earth, and the movement of all stars.
The third eye on her forehead represents transcendent wisdom and the ability to perceive the destinies of all living beings.
Mother of the Big Dipper and Celestial Lords
In Taoist cosmology, Doumu Yuanshun is regarded as the spiritual mother of the Seven Lords of the Big Dipper and the Six Lords of the Southern Dipper. Taoist belief holds that the radiance and spiritual force of all celestial stars originate from her divine essence.
Because the Big Dipper governs death and karmic judgment while the Southern Dipper governs birth and longevity, Doumu naturally stands above both systems as the supreme celestial mother who oversees the balance of life and fate.
She is believed to control:

- Official fortune and prosperity
- Disaster prevention and karmic purification

Relationship with Other Taoist Deities
Doumu Yuanshun shares close connections with several major celestial rulers in Taoism, including the Ziwei Emperor and the Gouchen Heavenly Emperor. In some Taoist traditions, she is even regarded as an embodiment of primordial cosmic qi itself.
She is also spiritually connected with systems of protection and destiny represented by the Three Terraces Lords, who are responsible for safeguarding life, health, and fortune.
Because of her transcendent position, Doumu is often viewed as existing above ordinary heavenly officials and star deities.
Religious Influence and Cultural Meaning
Although Doumu Yuanshun is less publicly famous than deities such as Guanyin or Mazu, she holds an exceptionally high status within Taoism. Temples dedicated to her are usually known as “Doumu Halls” or “Star God Halls,” often placed in prominent areas within Taoist monasteries.
