The Dragon Kings of the Five Emperors are a group of five directional dragon kings described in Taoist textual tradition. A Daoist reference identifies them as 五帝龍王 / 五帝龙王 (wǔ dì lóng wáng). The received Taishang Dongyuan Shenzhou Jing lists five members associated with east, south, west, north and center, using color-imperial titles. This page explains that member system; it does not describe a universal hierarchy shared by every Dragon King tradition.

“Five Emperor Dragon Kings” is another English rendering of the name. The emperor wording reflects the titles in this framework, rather than a claim that each dragon king is a supreme ruler. Associated Five Phase explanations should be distinguished from the member names printed in the text and from interpretations that vary between traditions.

Textual Identity and the Five Directions

The inspected passage names five dragon kings by direction and color-imperial title. It provides a textual basis for the group described here. This passage identifies the group; it should not be read as a complete administrative hierarchy for all water deities.

Five Phases: Association, Not a Universal Hierarchy

In the associated Five Phase framework, east corresponds to Wood, south to Fire, west to Metal, north to Water and center to Earth. These are cosmological correspondences, not five individually documented weather jurisdictions. Scholarship comparing related texts also shows that directional schemes can be adapted. A common framework should not be used to identify every directional deity or every Five Emperors figure as the same Dragon King.

Rain and Water in Religious Context

The received text places dragon invocation in a religious context that includes petitions for rain. Such passages record belief and ritual purpose; they do not establish that invocation controls weather or prevents floods. Detailed historical rain-cult development is a different question from identifying the five members.

For the historical question, see Five Dragon rain-prayer history.

The Five Emperor Dragon Kings

The directional group described here should be distinguished from other Dragon King groupings and water-related deities. Shared rain or water associations alone do not establish identical members or ranks. A related site profile is the Five Water Deities overview.
